Larry lives in Lupton, Michigan. He recently retired from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, where he was a Wildlife Biologist for over 30 years. He is an avid hunter who enjoys deer and upland bird hunting as well as his waterfowl hunting passion.
Larry carved his first hunting decoy in 1972, and hunted his first full rig of hand-carved mallards by 1973. Ever since that simple beginning, he has worked to perfect his decoys. He competed in numerous decoy shows throughout the 1970's and 1980's, winning ribbons with both Decorative and Service Class decoys. For the past 10 years he has returned to his original obsession and mainly carves hunting decoys. He still competes at some of the decoy shows around the country.
He carves over-sized hunting decoys from both northern white cedar and high density cork. The cedar bodies are hollowed and all decoys are keeled and balanced to ride the water like the real ducks he loves so well. The decoys are carved in a variety of positions to add realism to a spread and are painted with acrylic or oil-based paints. Decoys are available in many species commonly pursued in Michigan lakes and marshes.
